Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (November 17, 2015) – DeKalb County School District (DCSD) continues to partner with the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE), a program that recognizes outstanding teachers and school leaders in districts across Metro Atlanta. Nominations are now open for the 2016 Atlanta Families’ Awards, and will continue through January 22, 2016.

Eleven winners celebrated at the 2015 Atlanta Families’ Awards at The Carter Center on November 5, 2015, including Principal Katherine Kelbaugh of The Museum School of Avondale Estates and teachers Carrie Staines of Druid Hills High School and Lillian Galicia also of The Museum School of Avondale Estates, all a part of the DeKalb County School District.

“I am truly proud of our award-winning teachers. Their commitment to our children and public education is exemplary,” stated DeKalb County School District Superintendent, Dr. R. Stephen Green.

AFAEE recipients earn a $7,500 award by demonstrating excellence in three areas:

? increasing student achievement

? enhancing students’ self-esteem

? collaborating with key stakeholders

As a winner, the $7,500 award includes funding for a school project ($3,500), funding for a professional development opportunity ($1,500), and a personal stipend ($2,500). Applicants must also complete essays aligned to the award criteria along with a project proposal. DCSD teachers, assistant principals, and principals (charter and traditional) must have at least two years’ experience at their district school to be eligible for the AFAEE award.
