Signing Squad
(3rd-5th grades)
The goal of the signing squad is to promote inclusion of the deaf students with their hearing peers. Students will learn ASL in a “voice off” environment to promote learning of a second language. The students who join the signing squad will have the opportunity to use ASL throughout the day with their peers who are deaf and hard of hearing. The students who participate in the “Signing Squad” will be given a special designation (similar to the safety patrol) to pair up with a deaf student to facilitate interaction with other hearing peers. Students will learn about ASL, deaf culture and what it means to live as a deaf person in a hearing world.
The signing squad will meet every Tuesday in the media center from 7:05-7:35am. The first squad meeting will begin on Tuesday, September 26th. Be sure to read and discuss the guidelines and expectations with your child before making the decision to join Signing Club.
